Can you share a brief overview of your journey in the insurance industry and how you got there?

My journey in the insurance industry began at 16 when I started doing work experience for a local insurance broker during school holidays. During this time, I found myself constantly manipulating and analysing numbers, sparking a keen interest in the use of data. This interest influenced my choice of subject and university, leading to my recent graduation from Durham University with a degree in BSc Geography with a year abroad.

After university I joined Servca on a graduate program. Now, being a fully-fledged member of the team I am delighted with my decision, continuously developing and enjoying the challenging, fast paced environment.

What motivated your decision to join Servca?

I was drawn to Servca due to its small yet energetic atmosphere which presented the opportunity for immediate involvement and personal influence on the business. Additionally, Servca's energetic yet disciplined environment seemed like a perfect fit for me, and my first six months here have confirmed this.

What led you to work in finance?

My interest in finance stems from a lifelong enjoyment of working with numbers and data. Subjects like maths and physics were always my favourites in school due to their incorporation of numbers. The definitiveness of working towards a final goal and the constant challenges presented in finance are aspects that I find particularly appealing.

How do you stay updated on the latest trends and developments in the sector?

To stay updated on the latest trends and developments in the sector, I utilise LinkedIn to follow relevant people and pages. Engaging in conversations with industry professionals and attending events also helps me stay informed and learn the basics as I navigate my new role in the industry.

Where do you see the future of your work heading, and what excites you most about the industry's evolution?

Looking ahead, I believe the incorporation of technologies like AI into the insurance industry presents fascinating opportunities. I am excited about the potential to utilise technological advancements in innovative ways to improve efficiency and accuracy in my work. I believe that machine learning in the field of analytics will improve accuracy and increase speed within the workplace, resulting in more efficient and innovative techniques which will be positive for all levels of the insurance and finance worlds.

In your opinion, what qualities make a great team, and how do you promote collaboration among your colleagues?

Personally, cohesiveness is the most important quality for an effective team. At Servca, we achieve this through set overarching goals for the entire team and open communication channels to discuss progression steps and challenges. Collaboration is promoted by encouraging feedback and promoting individual ideas throughout the company and in team meetings.

And finally, what advice do you have for individuals aspiring to work in the insurance sector?

My advice is to be prepared for the fast-paced, dynamic nature of the industry. It offers opportunities for networking, expansion, and growth, but it's also important to take time to appreciate and enjoy the journey amidst the hustle and bustle.
